Income/Asset Requirements

When you submit the Affidavit of Support - Form I-134 or the Statement of Sponsor Support to the U.S. Embassy when applying for an F-1 visa or to Immigration for a Change of Status request, you and your sponsor must be able to show money on deposit or assets equaling the amount in the table below.

Figure the amount required as follows:

  • Tuition and books = $2200 per semester, room and board = $2200 per semester.  Total = $4400

  • If the student is married and plans to bring the spouse and one or more children, add $1200 per dependent for each semester.  For example, a student with a spouse and one child who plans to study for 2 semesters, add $4400 tuition, $4400 living expenses and $4800 (2 dependents) = $13600.
