Individual Tax Identification Number
(ITIN)

NOTE:  If you are eligible to work in the U.S. you should apply for a Social Security Account Number instead of the ITIN.

Also, DO NOT WORK WITHOUT PROPER IMMIGRATION AUTHORIZATION!  This is a very serious violation of U.S. law.

Many international students desire to open a savings account, secure a credit card and access their money through ATM machines.  If you have such an account, you are usually eligible to apply for the Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN).

To obtain an ITIN, the student must:

  1. Obtain a letter from their bank .  The letter should be addressed to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and must state that the student has opened an interest bearing account at their institution.

  2. To assist with the above process, Nomen Global can write a letter to the student's bank explaining this requirement.

  3. Take the bank letter to the IRS (Find IRS offices in Utah), along with the passport, visa, I-94 and current I-20.

  4. Complete the IRS form W-7 in English or the IRS form W-7(SP) in Spanish.

Special Instructions:  Check box f  AND  box h.  In the space after box h, write "Exception 1".  (Page 3 of the instructions explains that exception 1 is for those who have opened an account with a financial institution and who own the account).
